About the screening:
アメリカの四重奏楽団クロノス・カルテットの舞台作品『Sun Rings』の抜粋映像。『Sun Rings』は米国NASAが40年間以上に渡ってデータ収集を行ってきた、ボイジャー、ガリレオ、カッシーニなどの宇宙探査機から送られてくる宇宙空間の“音”を使って作曲された音楽（作曲：Terry Riley）パフォーマンスと宇宙映像を取り入れた舞台芸術作品。2003年5月に英国ロンドン・バービカン･センター、2004年10月に米国ニューヨーク州のブルックリン･アカデミー･オブ･ミュージック、ほか全米各地で上演されている。知の統合プロジェクトの一環事業として、来年日本招聘公演を予定している。
Excerpt from the performing arts
SUN RINGS, an 80-minute work by Terry
Riley that incorporates cosmic sounds performed by Kronos Quartet, celestial
choirs, and visual environment of images snapped by NASA’s spacecrafts. It was
performed at London Barbican Center in England in May 2003, Brooklyn Academy of
Music in New York in October 2004, and many other theatres venues thoruout the
United States. As a part of UHIP, the work are planned to be presented in Japan
next year.

知の統合プロジェクトについて ～なぜいま、科学と芸術の融合か～
ABOUT UNIFICATION OF HUMAN INTELLECT PROJECT
|
科学と芸術はその方法論こそ違え、元来、世界に内在する調和の希求と探究へと人類知性を駆り立てた人間精神の発露を具現化する方法手段でありました。芸術であれ科学であれ、歴史の偉大な識者たちの不滅の仕事の根幹を支えていたのは“ある個人を、そしてある分野を、さらにはある時代を突き動かしている、あるひとつの偉大なイメージ[1]”であったように思われます。19世紀産業革命以降、科学的知識の探究は実社会での応用性とそれに伴う利潤の追求へ、芸術創造の探求は名声と権威獲得の追及へと傾倒し、学術の本質である内在的精神性に基づく知性への探求は徐々にその影を潜めてしまいました。
21世紀グローバル化時代を迎えたいま、私たちは人類を世界調和へと導き示してくれる“あるひとつの偉大なイメージ”をかつてないほど希求しているように思われます。現代の大量消費・破壊時代に生きるわたし達は、自らの存在と自然界とのグロテスクな不調和性を漠然と意識下に感じ取っています。 科学がこのような時代に生きる私たちに与えてくれるのは、技術発展による効率的生産性が生み出す豊かで安逸な生活環境や、医療進歩による健康余命（あるいは軍事兵器開発による脅威）だけであっては決してならないのです。科学知識は私たち人類に、自然現象の深遠且つ神秘的崇高美を垣間見せてくれ、人間精神に尽きることのない詩想や想像性を喚起させてくれる、造的知性と感性の源泉なのです。
理性による分析と計算を通して知られる自然現象（科学知識）を、人間感性に強く働きかける抒情詩的表現（芸術）によって叙述することで、私たち人間がこの美しい自然の体現そのものであること、そして我々個々人はこの人間社会の一員である以前に崇高な自然連鎖の一部であるという事を、科学と芸術は今、手を取り合って人々に伝えてゆくべきです。人々の知的好奇心を喚起し、個々人を偉大な仕事へと駆り立てる偉大なイメージの形成は、科学と芸術による知の再統合によってのみ、為されうる仕事なのではないでしょうか。
「知の統合プロジェクト」は、1）．自然科学の知識の中に表象される美の本質を芸術文化活動によって伝えてゆくこと、2）．これらの活動を通して国際的な科学・技術・芸術の横断的協働ネットワークを広げてゆくこと、3）．21世紀人類の肥沃な知的文化基盤を創造してゆくことを使命として発案されました。
In the medieval Europe, a word Scientiae
represented “all fields of knowledge open to organized study”, and a word Ars represented “all fields of skill
open to organized acquisition”. Both words connoted creative activities in
leaning process that required great mastery and skill. The great thinkers of
the 20th century, Einstein, Bohr, Poincare stressed the importance
of creative thinking that lies in the domain where the arts and science merge,
since when the explosive inflation of knowledge has taken place. Mankind has
made great intellectual strides ever since.
Man seems to have a great inclination for knowing and learning.
It’s probably because knowledge gives one freedom of mind; it cultivates firm
faith in truth and deep love toward the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. To see
the fact in depth that all existing systemes including human bodies function as
collective natural phenomenon broadens one’s receptivity to and values of
nature. The breadth of receptiveness and values is the essential fount of the
creative thinking that harmonizes diverse bodies of knowledge into a next
revelation.
The Organizing Committee for ArsScientiae is organized
with the aim of pursuing harmonious coexistence of human intellect with nature.
Its mission is to build intellectual, cultural ground in the human civilization
of the 21st century by: nurturing the breadth of vision and mind in
science and arts; conveying the essence of beauty represented in science
conceptions and theories through artistic activities; and broadening a
cross-national interdisciplinary network of innovative thinkers.
